Carroll Leadership in Technology Magnet Middle School |
Good Afternoon Carroll Cougars! This is your principal, Ms. Keech with this week's announcements. A copy of this transcript will be shared through the Carroll Yahoo Email groups and posted to Keech's Corner on our website.
In the spring of 2013, your student took new tests based on the new, more rigorous standard under the Common Core State Standards and N.C. Essential Standards. The scores from this test were release by the state last Thursday. Individual student scores will be coming within the next few weeks. The new tests tell us how well students are learning under the new standards. With the new standards, students are being asked to learn more, and at earlier ages. Typically, when new tests are introduced and standards for learning are raised, a change in scores is expected. It is important to note that a change in scores does not necessarily reflect a change in students'academic progress. Students continued to grow academically in 2012-13. These new scores simply mean that we are expecting students to reach higher levels of learning than ever before. We strongly believe the new standards will better prepare our students to be successful when they graduate from high school. We will continue to work toward these new, higher standards that the state has set for our students. Scores have increased steadily over time in Wake County public schools on virtually every test that the state has developed. We will continue working hard to ensure that these new tests will be no exception. For more information about these new tests, including links to the district’s results and tips to talk to your student about the test scores, visit www.wcpss.net/parents/new-scores Carroll Families, we were finally able to make student adjustments to our 30 minute LEAD elective last week. As you are aware we created a new course this year called LEAD in which students are being taught the Covey principles for leadership. Our intent from the beginning of school was for the classes to be more thematic/focused electives (Math Leaders, Reading Leaders, Leaders in Science, Leaders in College Prep,Service leaders and etc.) however, due to Powerschool challenges we were not able to do that until after the first quarter. Students were selected to participate in the Math Leaders and Reading Leaders courses based upon their past EOG and CASE 21 scores and if they were not receiving any extra assistance throughout the rest of their day. The students selected for the Math and Reading leaders course will continue to get course curriculum to develop as leaders in math and reading and extra assistance in those areas to help their performance on state standardized tests and in their classes. Students were selected for the Leaders in College prep because they may be the first in their families to go to college or because they were identified by counseling or staff as someone who would benefit from the course. Students selected for the other elective courses were chosen at random. Please note that all opportunities are not finite and if you would like your child to take something else, please let their counselor know. Parents of 8th grade girls, this Thursday, November 14th from 12:22-1:17 we will have an informational meeting about the Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy. Come hear about this college prep high school program for 9th grade which has an online application deadline of December the 6th. Parents are also free to join us. Also on Thursday we will have our first quarter honor roll celebration beginning at 7:45 for 6th grade, 8:30 for 7th grade and 9:15 for 8th grade. Please continue to check our google calendar found on our main web site for upcoming events and activities. That's all for now! Goooooooo Cougars!
