Welcome back to a new school year! We hope this will be an exciting year offering all of you many new learning opportunities and experiences. We at Carroll believe consistent daily school attendance is at the core of academic success. In helping our students and families’ to best achieve these successes, we would like to review important Carroll Middle School and WCPSS School Board policies which apply to attendance issues. For a complete listing of the School Board Attendance Policies, please refer to the WCPSS Internet Website and follow the School Board link to the 6000 policies (Student Services).
Ten Day Letters for Unexcused Absences
Any student who has 6 unexcused absences anytime during the school year will receive a letter from the Carroll Principal informing the parents/guardian of the absences. This letter will state the North Carolina State Law that requires Compulsory School attendance up to age 16 years.
Prior Approval for Educational Leave and Make up Work
In order to request Educational Leave an ”Excused Absence for Educational Reasons” form must be completed by the student’s parent/guardian and turned into the front office two weeks prior to the student’s departure from school. Mrs. Stanley, the Carroll front desk receptionist, will provide you with a form and will also take all completed forms which will be reviewed by the Administrative staff. Per School Board Policy, it is the student’s responsibility to get the school work they will miss while away from school prior to their absence. The make- up work must be turned in to the teacher either the day before they leave or the day they return. Also a report describing the student’s educational experience is due on the day the student returns to school from the trip.
Make-Up Work for Absences When lengthy absences are anticipated students who are absent may have their parents call the Guidance Office, 881-1380, to secure make-up work All work will be gathered within 24 hours of the parent’s request.
Per board policy 6000 School work will be made up for excused absences under the following conditions:
1. If the absence is approved in advance and/or if the work is assigned by the teacher in advance, all make-up work, including tests assigned for the day of return, is due upon the student's return to school. Teachers should use discretion and may make exceptions in the case of students whose excused absences were not planned in advance, were beyond the student’s control, and the nature of which would not support make-up work the day of return (e.g., death in the immediate family, serious illness).
2.If the make-up work has not been assigned in advance, for absences of one (1) to three (3) days, the student will have one day for each day absent. For absences exceeding three (3) days, the student may have two (2) days for each day absent to make up work. Special consideration should be given in the case of extended absences due to injury or chronic illness.
3. The student is responsible for securing make-up work at the secondary level. At the elementary level, the teacher is responsible for assigning make-up work.
