Welcome to the CMMS Theatre Club!
Junior International Thespian Troupe #89195
Mission Statement:
To bring together students who share an interest in theatre and the performing arts, whether on the stage or behind the scenes. We promote learning about theatre through activities, field trips and performances/productions. We strive to foster an appreciation for all forms of the performing arts and to provide opportunities for artistic growth.
While this is classified as a "Club," this is truly an instructional theatre course, and every student who joins theatre club will gain insight into the workings of a theatre production (front and back of house). We have worked hard to establish strong ties with the Sanderson High School Theatre Ensemble, and our CMMS Theatre Club students will enter SHS fully prepared to confidently audition for the Fall Production in their freshman year.
Our CMMS Theatre Leadership Team is fully invested in the success of this program. We've only just begun...!

Here are some things that you may need to know as we launch the 2014-15 Theatre program at CMMS:
* Students who are interested in joining the theatre club must pick up, complete and return an application packet. This packet includes a form that the student fills out, a form that one of the student's CORE teachers fills out, and a form that one of the student's ELECTIVE teachers fills out. There are instructions in the packet for how each of the forms is to be returned. * For anyone who was unable to attend the first two theatre meetings, application packets are now available in Student Services (or you can download a copy HERE). * Applications packets MUST be returned by the first audition date (Wednesday, September 10th -- possibly the 9th, depending on audition sign ups). No application packet = no audition. * The calendar to the right is your first resource for any scheduling questions! -- Additional information will be sent home with the audition packets. * Supplies List: 2" binder, filler paper, 2 pencils, 1 pen * TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH, 6:30-7:30pm: CMMS Junior International Thespian Society Inductions and Theatre Awards Ceremony (we promise to hold this to 1 hour). Light refreshments will be served. This is going to be an awesome year! * Questions or concerns? Please email Virginia at [email protected] and/or Robin at [email protected] |

Junior International Thespian Society Information:
The difference between the school’s Junior Thespian troupe and the theatre program:
The Junior Thespian troupe and the school theatre department or program are not one and the same. The Junior Thespian troupe is a subset of the theatre arts program. It is the theatre students' honor society, and membership is earned. Any student may be a member of the theatre program, but only students who have been officially inducted and registered with the EdTA home office are members of the theatre program and the International Thespian Society.
What is the Educational Theatre Association?
The Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) is the professional association for theatre educators and includes a student division, the International Thespian Society (ITS), the honor society for high school and middle school theatre students. As the national leader for middle and high school theatre education, EdTA ensures that students have the opportunity to be recognized and to participate in theatre experiences led by professional educators.
What is the International Thespian Society?
The International Thespian Society (ITS) is the student honorary division of EdTA recognizing excellence in middle and high school theatre. Membership into ITS is earned by participating in an affiliated school’s theatre program and accumulating points towards membership. Since 1929, more than two million students have been inducted into ITS. Middle school students in grades 6 through 8 who have been inducted into ITS are known as Junior Thespians. High school students in grades 9 through 12 who have been inducted into ITS are known as Thespians.
How does our school benefit from International Thespian Society affiliation?
Carroll Magnet Middle School’s membership as a Thespian troupe allows us to recognize the achievements of our theatre students through induction into ITS—the honor society for school theatre. It also provides our troupe directors access to the resources of the professional association for the field of theatre education, EdTA.
How do students benefit from International Thespian Society affiliation?
Thespians and Junior Thespians receive the highest recognition due those who have demonstrated commitment and excellence in their school’s theatre program—induction into the world’s largest theatre honor society. In addition to the many tangible benefits listed elsewhere, inductees enjoy the sense of community and recognition inherent in being inducted into an honor society. ITS membership encourages them to practice their craft and to grow as a person. The skills that they learn from a quality theatre arts education—creativity, self-confidence, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, as well as specific theatre skills—will benefit them in their school days and beyond.
How do students qualify for membership?
Students qualify by earning points for their work in the theatre arts. ITS provides a point system guide for our theatre directors use. The points listed are the suggested maximum for excellent work.
Junior Thespians (grades 6 through 8): One point is equal to five hours of excellent work. In order to be eligible for membership in his or her school’s Junior Thespian troupe, a student must obtain a minimum of ten points. These points must be earned in a minimum of two productions.
All Junior Thespians receive:
• Membership in the International Thespian Society, the only international honor society for high school and middle school theatre arts students—a recognized demonstration of achievement.
• A membership certificate
• A personalized membership card
• Eligibility to:
-- serve as a chapter student officer
-- participate in Individual Events at chapter conferences and the National Individual Events Showcase at Festival
-- receiveThespian graduation and honor items
• Ability to begin their high school careers with half of the Thespian points required for high school induction.
Do students need to renew their memberships every year?
No. Payment of the one-time induction fee ($35) entitles the student to a lifetime membership, the active benefits of which last through middle school graduation. Upon graduation from middle school, Jr. Thespians become Jr. Thespian Alumni.
Do Junior Thespians transfer to high school troupes?
No. Junior Thespians moving to high schools must be inducted into the high school troupe. They begin their high school careers with at least half of the points needed for high school induction, usually five out of ten. When they become eligible for induction, they are submitted along with all other Thespian inductees.

Thespian Competition/Event opportunities:
- Junior Thespian Festival
- Chapter festivals/conferences
These celebrations of theatre on the local level are organized by many EdTA chapters established within a geographic area, typically U.S. states and Canadian provinces. At these events, Thespians and educators enjoy performances, workshops, and audition opportunities. Qualification for the National Individual Events Showcase (NIES) auditions (held at the International Thespian Festival) begins at chapter festivals/conferences.

**REMEMBER - We had a very large turn out for auditions! Unfortunately there were not enough roles to allow us to cast everyone. -- IF you are not cast in this show, it does NOT mean that you are not talented! We were overwhelmed by the depth of talent that we saw at auditions. Everyone should be VERY proud of themselves!!!

We sincerely appreciate all of your hard work and your partnership with the CMMS theatre program!

9.8.13: CMS THEATRE Nominations & Audition Workshop this week!
We had a great turnout at our informational meetings and our club is gearing up for a fantastic year! Some important information for the upcoming week:
Wednesday, Sept 11th, 2:30-4:30pm (Auditorium): Our 1st Official Meeting! In addition to our Improv work, we will nominate Student Directors (must be an 8th grade returning club member) for 2 Fall Showcase pieces. We will discuss Jr International Thespian Society officer roles, as well as nominate eligible returning club members for those positions. A packet of forms, club calendar and other important paperwork (some of which will need parent information & signatures) will be sent home from this meeting.
Thursday, Sept 12th, 2:30-4:30pm (Band Room): Audition Workshop! We will hand out audition packets, share information about the audition process (techniques, specific audition pieces, walk through the location/transitions) and answer questions to help the students prepare for auditions on Sept 18 & 19.
201
8.28.13: Some goals for the 2013-2014 school year include:
* All of the 2012-2013 goals are to be established as standard protocol for CMS Theatre activities (we will engage in these learning activities and collaboration opportunities every year)
* Establish CMS Theatre Club as a chapter under the Junior International Thespian Society
* Launch a Fall/Winter Production Showcase which will include more intimate scenes from a variety of plays which have much smaller Casts (something we cannot do for the larger Spring Production). The goal is to focus on the acting/performance while using minimal sets, props or costumes. We will introduce the students to musical theatre, in order to prepare them for our first Spring Musical ('Willie Wonka').
* Establish a Student Director program for our 8th graders (selected 8th graders will direct some of the scenes in the Fall/Winter Production Showcase).
* Establish a strong Technical Theatre program (selected students who are interested in strictly Tech will be educated on the technical infrastructure of our theatre, learn sound and lighting techniques & how they enhance the stage performance, and will be the primary tech resource for outside groups who share use of the auditorium).
* Establish strong ties with prospective theatre students from the primary elementary schools which feed into Carroll Middle School. Host special performance nights for rising 6th graders.

"Alice in Wonderland"
What an AMAZING first year of theatre at Carroll Middle School!
Thank you to our students, parents and staff for your enthusiasm and support as we launched this new program, inspired our students and shared our first performance of "Alice in Wonderland."
We met all of our goals for the 2012-2013 school year (as noted below):
* A series of workshops that will delve into information and techniques for successful theatrical performances and stage production prep/management. These will include: understanding theatre terminology, improv, scene analysis, character development, set/prop design & creation, costuming, and roles of the production staff.
* Guest Speakers who have a strong history in theatre, film or television production - or - who are currently working in local theatre.
* Connect with the Sanderson High School ITS (International Thespian Society) via a guest workshop on audition techniques (presented by SHS ITS) and by attending the SHS Theatre Productions as a club. CMS is a feeder school for SHS, so building this collaborative relationship will be beneficial to both schools.
* Fund raisers to directly benefit the growth of the club and it’s resources/supplies
* Additional Activities as determined by the Club members
