Welcome Back Cougars!
We are proud and excited to have both old and new Cougars back in the PRIDE!
7th Grade Elective Registration Form (Click Here)
Students who have registered over the summer will need to pick their elective. Each student has 4 core classes (language arts, math, science and social studies), health/PE and one elective (either 2 semester long electives or 1 year long elective). Please turn in to the Student Services office ASAP as classes are being scheduled and filling up quickly. Students who were already assigned to Carroll Middle School before the ending of the 2013-2014 school year have already filled out this form and do not need to do so again.

To Rising 7th and 8th Grade Parent(s) / Guardian(s):
We are initiating the conversation about course placements and electives for the next school year a little earlier than normal this Spring. One of the most difficult places to make placement decisions is in math. As you know, the state of North Carolina joined most of the rest of the nation this year in implementing the Common Core Curriculum for Mathematics. This is a rigorous set of standards that pushes our students to think, grow, and challenge themselves.
Our goal is for students to take the most challenging course possible in which they can be successful. With a new curriculum, we will not know End-of-Grade (EOG) test results for this year until next fall. Middle school principals in Wake County have agreed to the following three factors in making initial math placement decisions for the 2013-2014 school year. Students who meet all of the following criteria will be placed in the more rigorous course (Common Core Math 7 Plus for rising 7th or Common Core Math 1 for rising 8th):
· EVAAS score of 70% or higher (EVAAS is a projection of success in higher level math in 8th grade based on past EOGs)
· Current math course grade for 1st semester of C or better*
· Scores on the 2nd benchmark (a nine weeks test also known as “CASE 21”) for math this year of a 3+ or higher * (Scale of 1-4)
*Initial placement will be reviewed once third quarter benchmark and year end grades are available. The same performance scores are expected to maintain initial placement recommendation.
Your student’s data points are listed on their course placement sheet attached. All teachers will follow this placement criteria.
If you believe your student is placed in a course that is too easy or too rigorous, we strongly encourage you to get involved in the process. We recommend contacting your child’s current math teach to get a sense of their performance with the new curriculum. Below are a few important notes about requesting a change of placement:
· If you wish to request a higher placement than what the data suggests, you will need to complete a waiver form (on the back of the registration sheet). A review committee (to include the parent) will review existing data and make a recommendation to the principal.
· If you wish to request a lower placement than what the data suggests, you will need to complete a waiver form (on the back of the registration sheet). This request only needs approval of the principal.
· Overall, we will wait until closer to the end of the school year to review most change of placement requests. This will give the student time to complete the third benchmark assessment. Teachers may also request a waiver to move a student to a more rigorous course.
Your feedback is valued in this process. In addition to your current math teacher, your school counselor is also a valuable resource in this process. Please feel free to involve them in your discussions as well.
Sincerely,
Cynthia Keech, Principal
