This Friday, November 7th will be an Early Release Day. Students will be dismissed at 11:45. Please make sure that your child has a way home at 11:45. We will not have supervision after 12 due to our teaching staff participating in Staff Development. Want to know what your child is suppposed to be learning in Math? Still don't understand the Middle School Math Placement Criteria? Want to know how you can help your child at home with math? Want to hear from your child's teacher the expectations? Well we are holding our annual "Parent Math Bootcamp" this Thursday night from 5-6:00 in our media center. We hope that you will be able to attend and get the answers to all of those questions and more. Also on Thursday, Nov. 6th we will be hosting our Cougar Chat for prospective students and families at 4:00. Know anyone interested in Carroll next year? Then send them our way. On Wednesday, Nov. 5th student report cards will be coming home. Please review with your child their progress in school. Our Fall Sports Awards banquet is also this Wednesday, Nov. 5th at 6:30. Come and participate in the recognition of our fall athletes' hard work. PTA will hold their meeting this Friday, Nov. 7th at 9:00 am in our media center. Sam's Pizza is sponsoring our Dine out this week on Friday, Nov.7th. There will be lunch specials and games for the students. So come out and support our school and help raise some money. Builders club is collecting candy to send to our Troops overseas. Please bring your donations to Student Services for "Treats for Troops" October 30th through November 7th. Beta Club is currently conducting our annual food drive. Please drop off non-perishable items/canned goods to your LEAD class now through November 20th. This morning we conducted a Emergency Lockdown Drill. This drill was done in partnership with Wake County Public Schools Security staff, Wake County Sheriff's office, Raleigh Police Department and our site school administration staff. We conduct these drills periodically to make sure that all students and staff are knowledgeable of emergency procedures in case an emergency ever arises. We want to thank all students and staff for participating and to let all know that the drill was completed with minimal issues. Cougar Families, Please do not forget that there will be no school for students this Wednesday (October, 29th). It is a Teacher Workday. We have begun our Fall Food Drive. The last day to donate will be Thursday, Nov. 20th. Students can donate canned or nonperishable food to their LEAD class teachers. The school wide class with the largest donations will receive a pizza party for their hard work. The winning grade level will receive a smaller reward. Don't forget about our CMMS PTA Dine out on Tuesday, October 28th at Qdoba Mexican Grill from 3:00-8:00 pm Also, don't forget about the opportunity to purchase SCRIP gift cards from out PTA. Parents, our 1:1 tablet initiative is still coming. Please make sure that you take a moment to participate in our survey about the tablet roll-out and to read about the new initiative all located on the front page of our website. We will be sending more detailed information home soon. Carroll readers or people who aren't AFRAID to read, don't forget that this week is our Scholastic Book Fair in our media center. Come and see if you can find a favorite scary read. Cougar Parents! Do you or would you like to have all of your holiday shopping finished by Thanksgiving? If so, the Carroll PTA can help you get it done. We will be collecting orders for SCRIP Gift Cards until Wednesday, October 29th. Ask your child about the SCRIP order form they received from their teacher this week. Didn't get an order form? Extras can be found in the front office. With every gift card purchased the retailer gives a percentage directly to Carroll!! Its a WIN-WIN! All continuing volunteers that were approved for the 13-14 school year must reactivate as a volunteer by Oct. 31st. Volunteers may go to any WCPSS school and register in the media center on the intranet. All new volunteers have until Oct. 31st also. After that volunteers may register only on Mondays. Parents, next week (Tuesday, Oct. 28th) is the end of our 1st Quarter. Make sure that your child has submitted all of their late/make-up work. And at noon on Wed., we will be hosting our first Cougar Chat in the Media Center for prospective students and parents . Our Book Fair is coming next week so start saving your money now. During Book Fair week we have been lucky enough to be selected to host a visiting author. Jacqueline Woodson author of "Miracles' Boys" will be with us on Wednesday, Oct. 22nd. Parents if your child needs tutoring in Math, we are offering the following sessions: 6th grade on Tuesdays from 2:45-4:00, 7th grade on Mondays 2:30-4 and Tuesdays 2:30-4:45 and 8th grade Wednesdays from 2:30-4:30. Please contact your child's teacher or counselor if you need further information pertaining to math tutoring. Carroll families, don't forget that we are participating in the PTA Fall Fund-raiser right now. Your child should have brought home information about our fund-raiser last week. If not, please do not hesitate to contact our front office for more info. School picture day is this Thursday, Oct. 9th. So make sure that you dress to impress. This will be your yearbook photo. This Friday Oct. 10th will be our first school dance of the year from 2:30-5:30. Students may purchase tickets before school this week. They must have a signed permission slip from their parents and no ISS or OSS in order to be able to attend. Students must also be picked up from the dance by 5:30 or they will not be able to attend the next dance. This morning as a result of a communicated threat we received, we had an increase in police presence. Because we take every threat seriously, we followed our district protocals pertaining to threats to our safety. At security and police advice, we did not proceed into a code Yellow lockdown and school proceeded as normal. Please contact your child's counselor if you have any further questions or concerns. Carroll families we began our spirit week this week today with Character day. Students and teachers came dressed up as their favorite characters. Tomorrow is Twin Tuesday and our Pep Rally and PTA fund-raiser kick-off, Wednesday is "Dress to Impress", Thursday is "Throw-Back Thursday" and Friday is "Extreme School Spirit Day". Please note that due to the assembly in the afternoon that tomorrow will be a "C" day which will make this Friday a "B" day. On this Thursday, October 2nd we will be holding our 6th grade PARENT "411 meeting" in the media center from 5-6:00. Come and have all of your questions answered pertaining to Interim Reports and etc. If you would like to volunteer but don't know how, immediately following the 6th grade Parent "411 meeting" at 6:00, we will be hosting a "Volunteer Orientation" session. Please come and hear all of the ways in which you can volunteer. We will also walk you through the Volunteer registration process at that time. Just a reminder, Monday is dress as your favorite character day. Remember no masks or hats. Let's make sure that we set the tone for kicking off spirit week by showing our school spirit and participation! We will also be having our Pep Rally on Tuesday with a kick-off for our big PTA fundraiser. So make sure you show your school spirit each day and pay attention to what the next day's theme will be. Thursday, Sept. 25th will be a Teacher Workday. Students will not be in school that day. Please also note that our teachers will be in training that entire day and not available for conferences. When students return to campus on Friday Sept. 26th it will be a "B" day on their schedule and not the usual "C" day due to the Thursday workday. Parents of 6th grade students, please make sure that your child has had their TDAP immunization and turned in the documentation of the TDAPto our student services office by this Wed. Sept. 24th or they will not be allowed to return to school on Friday, Sept. 26th unless they bring documentation of the immunization. Cougar families, we are invested in our students and wish for them to be as successful in their academics as possible. Therefore, please help us in reminding our students that we have procedures and practices in place for their safety as well as for the best learning environment possible. Dress code violations and continual tardies to class are not something that we look forward to spending our days enforcing. Please make sure that your child is dressed in accordance to school rules (located in the front of their agendas, memo sent home in the summer mailer and posted on our website) before leaving home each day and encourage them to be on time to each and every one of their classes. Parents we would like to encourage you to become more involved in your child's school and volunteer. All volunteers (new and returning) must go on-line to register (you may go to any WCPSS media center ) by October 31st. After October 31st, individuals who were previously approved will have to submit a new online registration application with a new criminal record check. From Nov. 3rd through May18th any new volunteers to WCPSS may register online only on Mondays in any WCPSS media center. Please also note that we will be conducting a Volunteer Orientation on Thursday, Oct. 2nd at 6:00 pm in the Media Center. Please come to learn about volunteer opportunities as well as receive help in registering. Cougar families, please be advised that any student remaining after 2:30 on our campus who is not involved in a club or season athletics team does not have supervision. Please make sure to make every effort to pick your child up by 2:30 or have transportation arranged for them by that time. Please also note that if your child wishes to attend an after-school athletic event that they still must leave school at dismissal and only return for the game start time (most games do not start until 4:00).
